CSSM MB Summer Missionary Manual - Abuse 1
VERY IMPORTANT!!!
ABUSE AND LIABILITY
In today’s world the possibilities of being accused and charged for abuse are very real. It is our desire to protect you, as our workers, and our camps to the best of our ability. Here are a few guidelines and examples of situations to avoid that will help you to minimize the risks.
1. Report any injuries, fights or problems to the Director immediately.
2. Keep a detailed daily log that includes your schedule, any unusual incidents (and the time of these incidents and names of people present) and a record of each camper’s progress.
3. Do not ignore misbehaviour. Let the young people know that "Three strikes and you’re out".
4. Insist that your campers wear some form of clothing in bed.
5. Make sure there is two staff people present when campers are showering. Do not shower with your campers.
6. lf children need the affirmation or affection of a hug, hug the child from the side, not face on.
This list is very short in relation to the situations that could arise. The intentions are simply to make you aware of some situations so that you will avoid any others.
Generally speaking keep all campers involved in-group activities or in public view. Even counselling one to one can be done in public. Use the center of the playing field, a couple of chairs in the corner of the dining hall or a section of the dock by the beach.
"WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK THE DIRECTOR!"
NOTE: You are responsible to thoroughly familiarize yourself with the CSSM MINISTRIES NATIONAL CHILD AND YOUTH PROTECTION Policy. Full copies are found in the camp summer missionary room or with your Day Camp (VBS) supervisor. A summary of the Policy (see overall headings below) is found in the Appendix of this Summer Missionary Training Manual of which you were REQUIRED to read when you applied!
